1983年3月3日，國務院批準成立省轄瀘州市，下轄市中區(qū)和瀘縣、納溪縣、合江縣。1985年6月4日，國務院決定將敘永縣、古藺縣劃歸瀘州市管轄。

1996年7月1日，瀘州市行政區(qū)劃調整，設江陽區(qū)、龍馬潭區(qū)、納溪區(qū)和瀘縣、合江縣、敘永縣、古藺縣，市政府駐瀘州市江陽區(qū)大山坪。全市轄區(qū)面積1.22萬平方千米。
